Public, Private or Hybrid Cloud?

The Cloud can be broken down into public, private, hybrid and multi-cloud solutions. Choosing the right cloud service – or a combination of them – can be a very important decision for your business.

The Cloud

As the name implies, its not an invisible mass of data floating around in cyberspace. “The cloud” simply refers to the act of using a remote computer or server to store data or run programs, and relies completely on an extensive network of physical cables and data centres in order to operate.

Most people access the cloud on a daily basis such as Google Drive, iCloud, and Microsoft OneDrive which are all cloud-based. Web-based email services like Gmail or file-sharing platforms like Dropbox are also examples of cloud technology.

What is public, private, hybrid and multi-cloud?

Public Cloud

Public clouds are operated by third-party providers, such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure and are the most commonly used cloud services. The cables and servers in data centres is “shared” among other subscribers, which simply means that because public clouds are in essence multi-tenancy platforms, data from other “tenants” will be stored using the same hardware as yours. Public clouds feature a pay-as-you-go format depending on the amount of cloud storage you use.

Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid cloud is an integrated cloud service utilising both private and public cloud service to perform distinct functions within the same organisation. A company using the hybrid model will have some storage and services with a public provider, while other related and connected elements of the business will operate via a private cloud.

Private Cloud

Private cloud differs from public cloud in that its only used by one organisation that is isolated from others. It can be hosted on your business premises or at a service provider’s data center. A private cloud is usually offered as at a monthly charge due to its heightened security, increased flexibility and greater customisation.

Multi-Cloud

Multi-Cloud is the newest buzzword and it’s made up of more than 1 cloud service, from more than 1 cloud vendor – private or public. However, there is no connection amongst the use of the two types of cloud services. instead, different public and private cloud services are utilised depending on separate business needs.
