Social Media Risk http://www.pdq.co.uk/news/2017/03/02/social-media-risk Thu, 02 Mar 2017 15:43:00 +0000 http://www.pdq.co.uk/news/2017/03/02/social-media-risk
Social Media

Social networking has changed the way we interact with friends and associates. While social networks, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram  & YouTube play a significant role in our lives, they are also a high risk for security threats.

With hundreds of millions of users online, these tools not only attract friends and family wanting to stay in touch, but they also attract people wanting to know about you for the wrong reasons. Be aware of the top five security threats currently out there to help you stay safe online.

1. Having Your Identity Stolen

Identity thieves gather personal information from social media sites. Even if you have your account on the highest security settings, there are still ways for an identity thief to get your information. Most social network sites have information that is required, such as email address or birthday. It’s common for an identity thief to hack an email account by using social information. For example, a common technique to get personal information is by clicking on “forgot password” and trying to recover the information through email. Once the thief has access to your email account, they then have access to all information on your social networking sites.

So what can you do to protect yourself? You don’t have to delete all your social profiles or hide from the real world; just take these precautions.

  • Have a strong password. The stronger your password, the harder it is to guess. Use special characters like symbols and capital letters when creating your password. Also, don’t use “common” passwords, like your birthday or your child’s name.
  • Be careful with your status updates. Often, we innocently post status updates that would give an identity thief information they need to steal our identity. For example, you may post “Happy birthday to my mother!” and then tag her in the post. Likely, your mother’s maiden name will be associated with that tag now. A popular security question is “What is your mother’s maiden name?” and if you share that online, you run the risks of identity thieves getting the answer to this commonly used question.
  • Don’t reveal your location. You can use a fake location or make one up from another city and state. You may even be able to leave this information blank. Be cautious and never use a city and state where you live.

2. Getting Your Computer Or Social Profile Hacked

Hackers love social networking, going right to the source to interject malicious code. The codes hackers use can steal your identity, inject viruses to your computer, and obstruct bank account information, to name a few. Shortened URLs, such as those created on bit.ly, are especially susceptible to hackers. Shortened URLs can trick users into visiting harmful sites where personal information can be compromised because the full URL is not seen.

The best advice is to never click on a link until you are sure of the source. To tell if a link is safe, you can:

  • Hover over the link. If you hover over a link without clicking, you’ll see the full URL in the lower corner of your browser. If this is a website you recognise, go ahead and click.
  • Try a link scanner. A link scanner is a website that lets you enter the URL of a link you suspect might be suspicious to check for safety. Try URLVoid or MyWOT as possible options.
  • Check shortened links. A shortened link is popular on sites like Twitter where character length matters. Some shortened link sites include bit.ly, Ow.ly, and TinyURL. Use a service like Sucuri to determine if the real link is secure.

3. Inadvertently Letting Stalkers Find You

When you use social networking sites, you are posting personal information. Once information is posted online, it’s no longer private and can fall into the wrong hands. The more you post, the more vulnerable you become to those who may wish to harm you. Even with the highest security settings, friends, associates, and even the brands you “like” on your networking sites, can inadvertently leak information about you. The websites you subscribe to, the apps you download, and the games you play on social networking sites all contain personal information about you. Every time you browse a website, companies can put invisible markers on your computer called cookies. In theory, no two cookies are alike. When you are online, these cookies track your activity as you move from site to site.

To keep sites from tracking your activity, click on the “Do Not Track” feature. Most websites have an option for you to opt out of tracking. You can also clear the cache and cookies on your browser regularly to help prevent any problems.

4. Letting Burglars Know Your Whereabouts

Telling the online world where you’re going and when you aren’t at home is inviting burglars to your house.  Did you know that a run-of-the-mill burglar can break into your home in less than 60 seconds and spend less than 10 minutes stealing your possessions? By telling the world you are on holiday in Europe, you’re letting potential thieves know where you are, how long you’ll be gone, and where you live. Burglars are fond of constant updates, especially about your travel plans. You wouldn’t stand up in the middle of a crowd and announce you’re going on holiday for a week, would you? Of course not, but that’s what you do when you post your holiday pictures and plans online.

When you go on holiday:

  • Avoid posting specific travel plans. Never post when, where, or how long you’ll be gone.
  • Wait until you are home to post pictures to a holiday album.
  • Use highest privacy control. Only let certain groups, like a family group, view your photos.
  • Be selective with the status updates. You can use an audience-selector drop-down menu on Facebook to choose certain groups to see your status updates.
  • Stay offline. You’re on holiday, after all. Relax and forget about the online world for a few days.

5. Becoming Overconfident

One of the biggest threats to online security is overconfidence. Whether at home or at work, many users believe as long as they have a firewall and an antivirus installed, there is no threat to security. Many people also believe that they don’t have anything worth hacking so there’s no need to worry about security. With today’s technology, we are more connected to each other than ever before. When you neglect security, you not only put yourself at risk, but others are at risk as well.

To keep yourself and your information safe, pay careful attention to your online activity. Avoid posting information including:

  • Travel plans (see point 4)
  • Bank account information
  • Your full address and birth date
  • Your children’s’ names, school, and birth-dates
  • Location information, such as the name of your work place
  • Your daily schedule

You can still use social networks for all they were meant to accomplish, but you need to take extra precautions to make sure your personal information doesn’t get in the wrong hands. Know what threats you are most vulnerable to and take steps to protect yourself and your networks.

Key Reasons to Consider Outsourcing Your IT Support http://www.pdq.co.uk/news/2017/01/04/key-reasons-to-consider-outsourcing-your-it-support Wed, 04 Jan 2017 10:51:00 +0000 http://www.pdq.co.uk/news/2017/01/04/key-reasons-to-consider-outsourcing-your-it-support

Reduce Your Costs

The average annual salary of an in-house IT Manager is approximately £30 to £40K per annum. Added to this are the costs for recruitment, additional company benefits and on-going training to keep their skills up to date.

For a lot of smaller businesses, an in-house IT specialist is a luxury that they simply cannot afford. However, they are still left with a large potential cost to their business in periods of downtime resulting in loss of productivity and staff spending their valuable time trying to solve problems they do not completely understand.

Outsourcing to PDQ, your costs are reduced and consolidated into a fixed payment allowing you to easily budget.

Lack of In-House Expertise

Your business IT needs may peak and trough, so there isn’t enough work for a dedicated person. You may be a small company and simply don’t have enough space for another member of staff.

Although you are heavily dependent on your IT systems to run your business, you can’t justify a full-time, in-house employee. Therefore, there are no experts on hand if you have a critical failure and you will need to resort to costly emergency support should this occur.

Using PDQ support you can call a dedicated Service Desk and speak to an IT technician as often as you like. A team of experts are always on hand to proactively monitor systems and help fix any problem you may encounter.

Complement Your In-House Expertise

You may have a dedicated IT person in-house or a designated employee looking after your IT in addition to their normal job. You rely heavily on them for the continuity of your IT systems to run your business.

What happens if there is critical failure and they are on holiday, off sick, at an external event or meeting?

What if they are already dealing with a crisis and another one arises at the same time?

Or if there is a serious issue and they try everything they can think of, but it is beyond their capabilities?

Using PDQ you always have a team of experts on call that are never off sick or take any holidays at the same time. They can come up with solutions to complement and support your own internal IT staff.

Recruiting Your Own IT Staff

Perhaps you’re thinking about employing your own internal IT person. If you are not from a technical background how do you ensure that you recruit people with the right skill set for your business.

Recruitment is a tough, time-consuming and expensive process. It is easy to be confused with technical jargon and this could turn out to be a costly mistake for your business if you employ the wrong person.

Using PDQ you don’t have to worry, we can either provide you with permanent onsite personnel or a drop in service. Having an on call team of highly trained IT specialists equipped with the latest industry qualifications, most up-to-date technical knowledge and skill set available will give your business the edge.

Focus on Running Your Business

Your time is precious and should be spent concentrating on your core business activities like your staff, costs and most importantly meeting the needs of your customers. The last thing you need is to waste time worrying and sorting out IT issues.

Using PDQ will give you complete peace of mind, take the stress out of managing your technology needs and allow you to focus on running your business.

Increase Staff Productivity

You may think that you are saving money by keeping the responsibility for your technology in-house and distributing it internally. The likelihood is your employees are not focusing on their primary roles and are being constantly distracted trying to deal with niggling IT issues which is dramatically reducing their productivity.

Using PDQ your employees can call a dedicated Service Desk where a technician will quickly diagnose and fix their problem. This will speed up problem resolution, reduce your downtime and allow staff to be more productive by focusing on their core roles.

Utilising the Latest Technology

IT is a constantly changing environment and technology is transforming at a rapid rate. How do you find out if there is a new product, software upgrade or application that may be able to benefit your current operations?

PDQ is at the forefront of technology provision and will have a range of partnerships and accreditation with industry leading technology providers such as Microsoft, HP, Dell, IBM and Cisco to name a few. We gain advanced intelligence and training regarding the latest technological developments and solutions that will be able to help improve your business.

Access to Additional Services and Solutions

Are you worried about your business continuity? Need a disaster recovery plan? Want to support an increasingly mobile workforce? Need to reduce your print and telecommunication costs? Need an Information Security Policy or new telephone system?

PDQ have extensive knowledge and experience in a variety of IT solutions and through our consultative approach we will understand your business needs prior to making a recommendation. We are able to provide you with a range of on-going additional services and specialist advice.

Issue Avoidance

You may base your current IT strategy on a ‘break/fix’ scenario. This means that by the time you know there is a problem, your business and staff’s productivity has already been affected and you typically experience prolonged periods of costly downtime.

Using PDQ as your provider we can focus on issue avoidance by proactively monitoring your systems 24 hours a day. Problems can be identified and rectified before they affect your business, reducing any downtime and making sure that your IT services are always available when you need them.

It has been a busy summer at PDQ as we continue to improve our Managed Service solution with additional services monitored and a more comprehensive solution provided. The Network Health Checks which we undertook following the offer in the last Newsletter also produced some interesting, and in some cases quite worrying, results with many discs nearing capacity and an incredible number of critical updates not installed truly highlighting the benefit of the Managed Service to the customers who took advantage of the offer.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP1 New Arching and Web App Features

With the increasing volume of data being shared and stored in emails, the need to preserve this information has become critical for all businesses, Microsoft have recognised this and introduced Exchange Server 2010 SP1.

This latest version introduces integrated email archiving and long-term retention of your files and attachments without changing how you work. The new Personal Archive feature is a specialized mailbox associated with a user’s primary mailbox. It appears alongside the primary mailbox folders in Outlook and now in the Outlook Web App giving users direct access to archived emails in the same way as non-archived email, permissions can also be set to share these archived folders.

In short this new version will allow your business to indefinitely retain, share and instantly access all emails along with their original attachments within your network and now with the Web App feature you will have the some functionality whilst accessing via the Web. For more information on these new services available on Exchange 2010 please contact your Account Manager or Click Here.

Security

PDQ Computers are a partner of RSA, the premier provider of security solutions for business acceleration. Effective Network security is not only essential to protect your infrastructure and the confidentiality and integrity of your digital information but is also vital to ensure compliance with regulations.

At companies all over the world, the RSA SecurID® solution is used by employees who need secure remote access on a regular basis. But as business models change there’s a growing need to extend this industry-leading security to a broader base of users – contractors and part-time employees who occasionally work outside the firewall.

PDQ Computers would like to introduce you to RSA On-demand Authentication. This technology allows you to provide two-factor authentication to the “casual user” on an as-needed basis and at a lower cost. Please contact PDQ Computers to discuss your security requirements or Click Here.

We are approaching the halfway point of 2010 and there has been a lot of activity in the IT sector with new operating systems and core applications released along with a mass of new hardware, from HP Proliant G7 servers to iPads. PDQ Computers remain current with these developments and are ideally situated to provide advice for any new equipment, software or upgrades that you are considering in this very confusing market. Please contact your Account Manager for any requirements that you may have.

Network Health Check

With the introduction of PDQ Computers Managed Service solution this year, we are offering the first 20 customers that respond to this Newsletter a free Network Health Check.

This Network Health Check generates a comprehensive “snapshot” illustrating the current health of your Network. To accomplish this PDQ Computers deploy an agent, subject to your approval, on your network and monitor it for a period of 7-days. When the 7-days are up we generate a summary including several reports which give an excellent overview of your Network including the Hardware, Software, Disk capacity, Patch Status, Uptime and any changes during the 7-day period among other information.

Microsoft Exchange 2010

Microsoft Exchange 2010 is the newest version of the messaging and collaborative software solution from Microsoft. According to Microsoft, Exchange 2010 ushers in the next generation of Microsoft unified communications software as the first server designed from inception to work both on-premises and as an online service and introduces new capabilities to help organisations reduce cost, protect communications, and delight email users.

Microsoft claim that Exchange 2010 reduces your messaging costs by 50-80% and a report by Forrester Consulting, commissioned for Microsoft Corporation in November 2009, confirmed that significant savings were realised.

Exchange 2010 provides larger mailbox sizes without the need to purchase expensive storage hardware and handles continuous replication doing away with the need to use the clustering feature of windows server which requires an Exchange Server Enterprise Edition Licence. In addition to these savings a new feature of Exchange 2010 combines continuous replication technology with on-site data replication and off-site data replication reducing the cost of Disaster Recovery and Backup systems.

PDQ Computers are more than happy to discuss your requirements for an Exchange upgrade and recommend an installation.

Hot Server Boom

The Met Office have promised another barbecue summer and while it will be fantastic if they are right this year there are serious implications for Server performance.

It is generally recommended that the optimum temperature for servers is 18° - 27° C and this can easily be exceeded in server racks during the summer. Servers, Routers and Switches all produce heat and operating in excessive temperatures can cause failure and significantly reduce the life of components.

If your server room is not air conditioned we suggest that you give this serious consideration; even if the Met Office are wrong, server temperatures can greatly exceed those recommended even in a normal British summer. Maintaining the temperature of your server room within recommended limits is essential for the optimum performance of your equipment; PDQ Computers can assist with this, providing solutions from IP Temperature Probes through to comprehensive server monitoring.

Steve Morgan

We are very pleased to welcome Steve Morgan to the service team as a new Senior Engineer. Steve brings a wealth of experience with him having worked in IT for many years both in the UK and overseas across many platforms.
